Impractical Jokers

Impractical Jokers (truTV) — a polygraph examiner and lie detector hired for us television. Polygraph examiner.

Comedy is the hardest register for a polygraph, because the format needs the instrument to be genuinely working while everything around it is played for laughs. If the machine reads as a gag prop the joke stops landing.

So the examination is run straight. The sensors go on properly, the questions are real, and the examiner plays it completely deadpan — which is what makes the surrounding chaos work. That contrast is the whole reason a production hires an examiner rather than building a fake console.
